Venres 12 de abril, 19.30 h

An informal conversation with Joel Frederiksen and Rebal Alkhodari

Musicians: Rebal Alkhodari (voice, oud), Joel Frederiksen (voice, lute)

Two artists from the Muslim and Christian worlds meet in concert: The American singer and lutenist, Joel Frederiksen, and the Syrian singer and oud player Rebal Alkhodari, sing and accompany themselves in moving songs from their religious traditions. Together they sing in the language of Syriac, a dialect of aramaic, the „Abon Dbashmayo“ (Lord's Prayer) and they find in religiously ecstatic Sufi and Shaker music and dance a common ground. Parallel stories from the holy books are told: Jubilant singing for Mohammad as he enters Medina and the triumphal "Hosanna filio David" (Hosanna to the son of David) for Jesus as he enters Jerusalem are presented side by side. The two musicians make it possible to experience that, even in the guise of different cultures, we live in the same human world of experience with the same existential questions.

Cynthia's Shining Sphere with Emma Kirkby

Cynthia’s Shining Sphere — Music from Henry Purcell and John Blow with Dame Emma Kirkby

As with John Dowland, Henry Purcell (1659-95) was known by his contemporaries as "Orpheus britannicus". In a sadly short life-span of only 36 years he managed to compose an incredible amount of work, making him the most important English composer of his generation. Purcell's over 100 songs and 42 duets show his sensitive text setting and his high art with the english language. We owe him thanks for producing the first great opera in England, Dido and Aeneas.

Sometimes humorous, at other times deeply moving works by Henry Lawes (1595-1662) and John Blow (1649-1708), a teacher of Henry Purcell, give us an overview of music in England between Dowland and Purcell.

Espacio Turina (ICAS), Calle Laraña, Sevilla

Interpreten: Emma Kirkby - Soprano / Joel Frederiksen - Bass, Archlute / Axel Wolf - Theorbo, Archlute / Domen Marinčič - Viola da Gamba
